Jeannette is the owner and lead editor of Polar Bear Editing.

She started college in 2006 as a single mother to a two year old. Through attending school together, she and her ex got back together and had another son. Working, raising kids, attending college courses with a spouse- was a lot to manage but they made it through. She finally finished school in 2016 after studying English for ten years.

At the age of ten, Jeannette wrote her first ‘chapter book’. Her mother was a night time janitor for office buildings and banks in Florida. Jeannette would often help out and her mom would pay her. As a bonus she got to swipe some lollipops from the bank stash and keep any interesting trash that was tossed. One night she collected some unique paper being thrown out. It was gray, thick, and textured. Wanting to do something with the paper she decided to write a book. It was about two girls on a ghost train. Illustrations included. Thus began Jeannette’s adventures in writing and love of English.

She went on to write two novels, dozens of short stories, and hundreds of poems before the age of twenty. It still did not occur to her that a career in the literary field awaited. It should have been obvious but sometimes the most obvious things simply are not.

She was first introduced to editing in her teens as she worked to perfect her poetry through brutal analysis and constructive criticisms from the writing community. She would analyze fellow writers’ work and they would help each other improve their craft.

In college Jeannette received a lot of requests from foreign students to edit their papers when they found out she was an English major. She was happy to oblige and in the process became familiar with the language struggles of non-native speakers. Decoding garbled grammar is a hard-won skill!

Also, while attending college, working full time, aiding fellow students, caring for her children, and editing her husband’s papers, she began to work as a freelance writer. This provided experience working with clients and used her college gained skills of meeting expectations and deadlines.

When a client asked if she would do a developmental edit she accepted the challenge. They were pleased with the work and asked for further evaluations on other projects. Jeannette quickly realized she loved helping other authors hone their craft and improve their stories.

After thousands of cumulative hours reading for pleasure and work, writing, discussing writing, editing, studying writing, studying classic works and middle grade contemporary works alike, taking editing classes outside of college courses, and building a reference library- she feels qualified to provide top-notch editing services with excellent customer service, a dash of humor, a splash of compassion and understanding, and a wallop of butt-kicking your work into higher gear.
